Class Rates

  • Most classes run in a Series of 6 weeks. Each series is $45 for YWCA members or $55 for non-members.
  • A $30 YWCA Class Pass will allow you to drop into any 3 classes. YWCA Class Pass is non-transferable. Expires May 5, 2015.
  • A single class drop-in is $12
  • NO REFUNDS OR EXCHANGES.
Note: Unless otherwise stated, for all classes, Series I and Series II are the same level.  Series I is NOT a prerequisite for Series II.

Ballet

Gain strength, flexibility and grace. Get a fun workout using ballet techniques. For beginners, all levels welcome. Instructor: Jana Hiraga, former member of American Ballet Theatre, and Lauren Weiss.

Yoga

Drawing on a combination of yoga styles, these well-rounded classes teach balance of movement and stability that links seamlessly with breath and body awareness.  Instructors: Melissa Williams, certified Yoga instructor, holds a 500-hour certification that she received in the YogaWorks Method.

Join professional instructors Jean and Bromley as they introduce you to the wonderful world of Lindy Hop.  Learn basics and several variations so that you will be swinging the night away, whether you are preparing for a wedding, a party or just a night out on the town.  Instructors:  Jean Ma & Bromley Palamountain, award-winning swing dance instructors.

Explore the foundations of this dynamic art form of multicultural Southern Spain known for its intricate rhythms, percussive footwork with an emphasis on a strong, grounded and expressive upper body.  Instructor: Sara Ayala, Co-founder of Flamenco Vivo, studied in Spain with Flamenco masters.

Jazz Funk

Get a workout, acquire jazz dance technique and flexibility. Learn a variety of routines that incorporate hiphop and jazz. For  all levels! Instructor: Jenny DeRuntz, former instructor and coach for United Spirit Association and Columbia University.

Connect to the passion, music and dance of Salsa! Ruth Caspary will teach the footwork, mini-patterns and styling you need to be a great Social Salsa Dancer. Review and practice are part of the program as well as lead and follow techniques. More experienced students will be challenged. No partner required. Non-rubber soled shoes suggested. Instructor: Ruth Caspary, Owner of Latin Connection Dance in Oakland.

A continuation of basics but using key moves such as synchronized turns and hand tosses. Students will learn transitions from basics into these moves and build up mini-patterns. Ruth Caspary will break down the move and teach the transitions that will have you looking like an Intermediate dancer right away. Students with solid Salsa basics are welcome. No partner required. Non-rubber soled shoes suggested. Instructor: Ruth Caspary

Acting

Students will have an opportunity to work on memorization techniques, scene study and feeling comfortable being in the spotlight.  We will also warm up with fun theater games.  For beginners, all levels welcome. Instructor: Josiah Polhemus, holds an MFA from American Conservatory Theatre and has performed professionally in film and theater for over 25 years.

This beginner-friendly class will help you learn powerful techniques to enhance self-confidence, self-awareness, listening, voice & body work, storytelling, teamwork and leadership skills.  Each class will include theater games that will keep you laughing. Instructor: Josiah Polhemus.

Have fun and get a great work out by learning the fundamentals to Hawaiian hula as well as an introduction to Tahitian dance. This class will focus on developing controlled movements, isolations, and correct dance posture all to beautiful and upbeat choreography. Instructor: Jonica Little, former member of dance groups Iaorana te O’tea, in Santa Barbara, and Na Hoaloha O’Polynesia, in Simi Valley.

This feminine and ancient art builds strength, stamina and self-esteem.  Learn body isolations and percussive hip movements.  Instructor:  Ahava, a multi award winning performer based in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Learn fundamental moves and various routines while grooving to the latest music, a fun and challenging workout for beginning to advanced-beginning levels. Instructor: Katherine Brown, member of Mind Over Matter, a Bay Area performing dance group.

In this Bollywood dance-fitness class, the energetic and infectious world of Bollywood will put a smile on your face. This class uses easy-to-follow moves- no prior experience necessary. We use a fusion of music and moves – classical Indian, Bhangra, hip-hop, salsa. A toning portion means you get a full body workout in one hour. Instructor : Phiroozeh Romer is a certified Bombay Jam instructor and has taught Bollywood fitness around the world. 

Argentine Tango

This beginner-friendly class will focus on fundamental techniques to prepare you for the social dance floor. Experienced tango dancers are welcome to attend to improve their dance.  Instructors: Jonas Aquino and Monza Lui studied Argentine Tango in Buenos Aires, and have taught throughout the Bay Area.

This class will review the fundamentals, and then go beyond, exploring this beautiful dance from Argentina. All level tango dancers are welcome to join the class to improve their dance.  Instructors: Jonas Aquino and Monza Lui.
