Art of Alfred Hitchcock New! | Return to Top
Using spellbinding clips from Alfred Hitchcock’s greatest films, Marilyn Fabe, author of Closely Watched Films and Senior Lecturer in Film Studies at UC Berkeley, will demonstrate techniques in film analysis to help viewers better understand and enjoy the art of film. Learn why Alfred Hitchcock, creator of suspense thrillers, is also considered a serious film artist.
Marilyn Fabe teaches courses in the history and aesthetics of the silent film, the history and theory of the sound film and special classes on Hitchcock, Chaplin, Woody Allen
and others. Her book Closely Watched Films discusses the accomplishments
of fourteen film directors, illustrating each director’s contribution to narrative film art. She writes film reviews, lectures at the Pacific Film Archives, and gives talks at the Albany Twin Theatre, among other activities.

15th Annual Shadow Day | Return to Top

The YWCA will be hosting its 15th annual YWCA Shadow Day at Cal event on Thursday, April 10, 2008 from approximately 8:00am-3:30pm. Shadow Day will give Oakland and Richmond high school students the opportunity to see what college is really like. This experience may encourage them to visualize college as a real option for their future. It also represents a great one-time volunteer opportunity for student groups or organizations. Each high school student will be matched with a Cal student, one-on-one. They will attend classes, tour the campus, dorms, Greek houses or Co-ops, workshops, and spend the day with a Cal student who can give them “the inside story.” In return, for everyone's volunteer efforts, each person will receive FREE breakfast, lunch and a t-shirt! In addition, this year, we have many raffle prize giveaways donated by local vendors in Berkeley.
Many of these high school students may not be “college-tracked” and are under-represented in the university system. For some of them, it will be their first time on a college campus. The high school students come from diverse backgrounds and experiences. We hope to have Cal students from many backgrounds participate, and we welcome individuals or entire student organizations to participate as a group.
Below is a downloadable copy of the mentor application and flyer. Applications may also be picked up at the YWCA. Due ASAP!
