Shadow Day | Return to Top
18th Annual Shadow Day
April 2011
More Info Coming Soon.

Shadow Day brings together over 600 participants including 300 high school students from neighboring communities (Oakland, Richmond and Berkeley) to be matched with 300 current UC Berkeley students in one- on-one pairs. Many of the high school students are not "college- tracked" and are under-represented in the university system. These students come from diverse backgrounds and experiences. For many of them, they have not applied to college and will be visiting a college campus for the first time. They will be given the opportunity to learn first-hand, from Cal students, what college is really like.

The day begins in the morning when the high school students arrive to find their Cal volunteer, and continues throughout the day with the pair going to classes, workshops, and touring campus. We will also provide breakfast, lunch, and t-shirts to all our participants. Most importantly, we will be providing an opportunity for high school students to be inspired to acquire information and help in applying and paying for college.

Contact the YWCA for questions.

What is it about credit cards that seem so dangerous and so exciting at the same time? Is credit money? Join us in this powerful session to learn about the world of credit cards. We will discuss how credit cards work, how to get one, how to avoid the dangers and scams, and how to use them while staying out of debt and managing your money. We will define the strange terms we always hear: interest rates, minimum payments, credit history, identity theft and credit score. And you will have an op- portunity to see a credit report and learn how your credit life is tracked. Learn to use the power of plastic and make the most of your cash, your credit, and your brilliant financial future.

Living Within Your Means: Yes You Can! (by Ly Franshaua Pipkins)

Ever wondered how to make the most of the money you have? Come and learn how to identify the difference between a spending plan and a budget. Learn how to use a spending plan and learn how to build a sold, prudent reserve/contingency fund (3-6 months living expenses).

Strategies for Managing Money on an Irregular Income (by Change Jones)

Managing our finances can be daunting especially if we live on an irregular income . In fact, it can seem down right impossible. But it can be done! Join Strategies for managing money on an irregular income and learn how to budget, save, and manage cash flow in pursuit of your dreams. This workshop is ideal for self-employed women such as artists, consultants, healers, and the like.

Each workshop covers a different financial literacy topic and runs independent from each other. All workshops are free of charge and are held at the YWCA. Must pre-register to reserve your spot. Limited space.
