20th Annual YWCA Shadow Day at UC Berkeley

Have a high school student shadow YOU for a day!

Shadow Day brings together over 600 participants including 300 high school students from neighboring communities (Oakland, Richmond and Berkeley) to be matched with 300 current UC Berkeley students in one- on-one pairs. Many of the high school students are not “college- tracked” and are under-represented in the university system. These students come from diverse backgrounds and experiences. For many of them, they have not applied to college and will be visiting a college campus for the first time. They will be given the opportunity to learn first-hand, from Cal students, what college is really like.

The day begins in the morning when the high school students arrive to find their Cal volunteer, and continues throughout the day with the pair going to classes, workshops, and touring campus. We will also provide breakfast, lunch, and t-shirts to all our participants. Most importantly, we will be providing an opportunity for high school students to be inspired to acquire information and help in applying and paying for college.

Stacey Tisdale

On air financial journalist Stacey Tisdale has reported on business and financial issues for more than 15 years. Ms. Tisdale authored a book, which was released in September 2007, titled The True Cost of Happiness: The Real Story Behind Managing Your Money. (Publisher: John Wiley & Sons).  A financial expert, Stacey has created a life skills and financial literacy curriculum called Winning Play$ for high school students in conjunction with NFL Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott’s All Stars Helping Kids Foundation. Winning Play$ was awarded the U.S. Department of Education’s Excellence in Economic Education award for 2010 and in 2011, The National Association of Black Journalists awarded Stacey its 2011 Community Service Award for the program as well.

Stacey is the Financial Correspondent for PBS national newsmagazine show Need to Know.  In addition, she is a financial expert on NBC’s Today Show. She is also a blogger on the Huffington Post – Black Voices platform. From 2002 to 2004, Stacey filed business and consumer reports for all of the CNN networks, including, CNN, Headline News and Marketsource which serves more than 600 local stations.  Ms. Tisdale also reported for “Inside Africa,” a weekly news magazine show on CNN International.  During this period, Stacey Tisdale contributed reports to “Money Talks,” the nationally syndicated program created by BusinessWeek. Ms. Tisdale has appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” as a financial expert and in O magazine.

Her experience also includes hosting a show on “Tech Live,” TechTV’s daily news program.  During the 1990’s Ms. Tisdale was a business correspondent for CBS News, CBS MarketWatch, The Early Show, CBS Evening News, and CBS Radio.

Stacey’s journalistic career began at Dow Jones & Co., where she produced, wrote, and eventually reported and hosted programming for Wall Street Journal Television, which eventually became CNBC.  Prior to that, Ms. Tisdale was a writer for Dow Jones newswire service, Telerate.

Stacey’s broadcasting career came after her work on Wall Street as a cash manager for the commodities firm Balfour Maclaine International.

Stacey Tisdale created a personal finance curriculum for college students on behalf of the White House that is now a mandatory offering at Historically Black Colleges and Universities across the country. That curriculum is also offered in CUNY schools. Stacey has also conducted research for the United States Congress on the financial behavior of professional athletes.

Stacey Tisdale also creates financial education and life skills programs for professional sports teams and corporations based on her research including WNBA team the Washington Mystics, the NFL Super Bowl champion New York Giants, and the female employees of Microsoft.

Stacey Tisdale graduated from Marymount College in 1988, where she studied international business and finance, and she attended Polytechnic of Central London in England. She has traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean, Europe, Africa and Cuba.  She is a board member and advisor for John Hope Bryant’s financial literacy organization, Operation Hope.  Stacey is also a board member of the YWCA in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Charlotte Stallings

Charlotte Stallings talks about the importance of getting a handle on the money side of your personal or business life, and how to make better money decisions. She is also a motivational keynote speaker. She opens and closes conferences and events, for companies and associations that want to boost morale and inspire their people to do their best.

A former Vice President of Investment Strategies at Ameriprise Financial, she developed a national initiative to provide investment and financial planning advice geared specifically to women. She served as the firm’s National Spokesperson on Women and Investing Issues. During her tenure she also coached, presented to and trained over half of the 12,000+ financial advisor field force on strategies to help them be more productive, and achieve greater success in their businesses and personal lives.

Charlotte gained expertise in the nuts and bolts of sales, marketing, business and leadership from her years at US Banks, Xerox and over 20 years at American Express. By taking risks, making mistakes and gathering information, she grew into the kind of expert that you can trust.

Charlotte has made appearances on CNN and other national and regional media outlets, and has been featured as a financial contributor in Essence Magazine. Charlotte is a weekly in-studio guest on Houston’s FOX26 ‘Your Money’ segment, and is also a member of the National Speakers Association. Recently Charlotte was selected by The Steed Society and Comerica Bank as one of the Top 25 Women of Houston.

Charlotte is the author of I Wish Someone Had Told Me: Financial Lessons Learned the Hard Way.

Charlotte lives in Houston with her husband Ron and their daughter, Milan.
