Our History

In 1889, seventeen women started the YWCA at UC Berkeley to serve the needs of women and girls and as the decades passed the YWCA expanded its focus to encompass many significant social issues. The YWCA at UC Berkeley has a 115-year tradition of dedication to the empowerment of girls and women and to racial and social justice for ALL people. Our programs and services reach out to the diverse populations of our city including students, immigrants, foreign students, at-risk youth and the unemployed. The YWCA at UC Berkeley is the only organization in Berkeley through which you can reach this breath of population.

Board and Staff Composition

The Board and volunteers of the YWCA at UC Berkeley represent a great variety of employment fields, academic majors, and interests. The diversity of the Board of Directors, volunteers and staff reflects that of our community. The 30 board members range in age from the 20s to the 70s, with many religions and most ethnic, racial, and socio-economic groups represented. This diversity in all areas is reflected in our volunteer and staff groups as well.

YWCA Staff and Volunteer Development Online Manual

During the Change Initiative, between Convention 2000 and Convention 2001, we chaired the task force, Staff and Volunteer Development in the YWCA. It was abundantly clear to us that YWCA leaders were looking for samples, ideas, guidelines for the multitude of tasks facing us daily. From our research with associations of all sizes, all across the country, we found many similar requests: staff job descriptions, committee job descriptions, personnel policies, and planning resources. We put a call (really an e-mail) out to YWCAs asking for copies of their "Best Practices," and we heard from large, small and medium sized associations, and from several retired YWCA professionals.

What we are attempting to do is give you samples of "what works" in a variety of settings. In many cases, there are several samples. Please take a look and print out and use whatever you want! We intend for this to be a living, changing, flexible website, so please e-mail us your ideas, additions and changes. (to sbettinelli@ywca-berkeley.org)

This is for you - the staff and volunteer leaders of Today's YWCA!
