YWCA Program Member and Activist Pearle Nwaezeigwe shares her latest project with the YWCA Community and beyond:
“Rated R” is a project created by 3 digital activists which teaches you how to maximize
resilience and self-care while engaging in activism on social media. We – Pearlé Nwaezeigwe,
Lili Spira, and Rachael Cornego – have been trained in techniques for viewing sensitive social
media content by the Human Rights Center Berkeley and Amnesty International.
The idea for Rated R is stemmed from the trauma and violence that is being experienced and
witnessed during the COVID-19 pandemic, from the racist violence against Black communities,
and the persistent sexual violence in Nigeria and the United States. As we are witnessing our
communities around the globe rise up to injustice and take part in the Movement for Black
Lives, we saw the need to be a part of the digital revolution.
The revolution is now brought to our fingertips in ways that are more accessible than ever,
thanks to social media. However, many users are currently at home, scrolling through dozens,
potentially hundreds of potentially violent and painful photos, videos, and stories every day.
This can be overwhelming and triggering without the necessary practices in resiliency.
Just like the movie ratings, if a show has nudity or graphic violence, it is Rated R. The goal of
project R is to similarly, apply a mental rating to all the violent content watched by users each
day on social media.
Resilience is defined as “the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy,
threats or significant sources of stress” It is necessary for long-term participation in social
Resilience is what allows you to keep fighting, even when you’re out of energy and feel like all
hope is lost. In building resilience, you’re resisting systems that seek to oppress and marginalize
and destroy entire communities.
We carefully created visual and fun tips for viewing graphic content, intersectional mental
health resources, mindfulness worksheets, and more! We also appreciate your input in terms of
resources (articles, selfcare tips etc) and curating a global music playlist
