Executive Director

The YWCA Berkeley/Oakland, a dynamic organization dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, developing leaders, and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all, is seeking an Executive Director. The YWCA is located at 2600 Bancroft Way, Berkeley, CA. Through the YWCA, UC Berkeley students and volunteers advance the YWCA Mission and Hallmark Programs through participating in a variety of initiatives and activities that provide opportunities and services to the community. The successful candidate must have enthusiasm for the YWCA mission, strong leadership skills, and first-hand experience related to the goals inherent in our mission and Hallmark Programs. In addition, experience in guiding volunteer programs, working with a Board of Directors, financial management and human relations are essential. The annual salary for the Executive Director position is $140,000.

The YWCA Berkeley/Oakland is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, developing leaders, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. The YWCA is a global movement working for the empowerment, leadership, and rights of women, young women and girls in more than 100 countries. We are an independent, non-profit organization that provides programs, classes, workshops, and resources for the Berkeley and Oakland community. We also work closely with UCB students since we are located near the University of California, Berkeley campus. The YWCA Berkeley/Oakland has over a 130 year rich tradition of dedication to the empowerment of girls* and women*, to racial and social justice for ALL people.

General Description:

The Executive Director is a visionary and strategic leader who creates a roadmap for the organization's future, sets long-term goals, and effectively leads the delivery of those goals for the YWCA Berkeley/Oakland. They work with the staff, volunteers, and various stakeholders to inspire and motivate them towards achieving the mission and vision of the organization.

We aim to empower women and eliminate racism by maintaining a commitment to social justice, working to eradicate systemic oppression, and practicing anti-racism. We maintain high ethical standards and comply with YWCA Berkeley/Oakland policies and procedures, and local, state, and federal laws and regulations.

Key areas of responsibility:

  • Strategy and resource development,

  • communications and advocacy,

  • financial management,

  • staff management and organizational culture,

  • board relations and support,

  • programs direction and

  • operations oversight and building management.

Strategy:

Lead vision and strategic development, guide and monitor the implementation process, and provide flexible and emergent leadership. Build and maintain relationships with local organizations, communities, partners, and public policymakers to identify potential strategic partnerships to increase resources and impact. Keep up-to-date with trends that shape the operating environment, such as developments in philanthropy, public policy, demographics, and technology, and promising practices in social services, social justice work, and nonprofit management. Ensure that YWCA Berkeley/Oakland always meets affiliate requirements from YWCA National.

Resource Development:

In collaboration with the Leadership Team, grant writer, and Board of Directors, the Executive Director develops and implements a diversified fund development strategy and plan and encourages a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization. Partner with the Board to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major donors. Seek and cultivate new funding opportunities including grants and donors. Report and track requirements for all funding sources.

Communications and Advocacy:

Represent YWCA Berkeley/Oakland’s mission, vision, values, and programs accurately and compellingly. Actively promote the organization's work through networking events, meetings with potential donors, board members, and partners. Provide strategic leadership for external relations, including media relations, community relationships, and marketing. Serve as YWCA Berkeley/Oakland’s primary media spokesperson. Invite community stakeholders and supporters into the organization’s racial equity work. Provide leadership in determining when and how to participate in public education and advocacy campaigns with partners. Engage in advocacy to advance YWCA Berkeley/Oakland’s mission and to work for systemic change.

Financial Management:

ED is responsible for the following:

  • An appropriate accounting system.

  • Adherence to the organization's financial policies and sound management of all financial assets, including revenues, investments, property, and equipment.

  • Creation of a sound annual budget for board approval.

  • Quarterly financial reporting to the board of directors.

  • Compliance with all funders, federal, state and local requirements and reporting-to-funder requirements.

Organizational Culture and Staff Management:

Supervise the Leadership Team, model and promote an organizational culture that reflects the core values of the YWCA Berkeley/Oakland, and champion the organization's equity goals. Translate equity goals into concrete and accountable actions and lead organizational change with attention to both relationships and results. Hire and develop staff and maintain opportunities for performance feedback and professional growth. Ensure compliance with personnel policies and applicable HR laws.

Board Relations and Support:

In cooperation with the Board Executive Committee, design and implement effective board meetings and planning sessions that foster the engagement of all board members. Assist the Board of Directors with board recruitment, orientation, integration, and evaluation. Inform the Board of Directors on critical issues. Regularly update the Board of Directors on the organization’s programs and equity work. Support them in achieving their board-identified equity goals. When applicable, ensure that board committees have staff participation and support.

Programs:

In partnership with the Directors of Programs, ensure that:

  • YWCA Berkeley/Oakland has effective systems for understanding community needs, engaging communities, and evaluating programs and services.

  • Incorporate racial equity into operations and programs and ensure every staff member identifies racial equity goals to advance through their positions.

  • Programs meet contractual requirements and align with the organization’s mission, values, and strategic priorities.

Building Management and Operations Oversight:

Supervise the Operations Director and Building Manager's responsibilities in operating the physical building’s internal and external needs, including all repairs and maintenance. In partnership with the Operation Director, ensure that technology systems and facilities meet the organization's needs. Direct all contractual agreements and relationships with tenants, all aspects of leasing sections of the building, including enforcement of leases. Plan for future use of the building by prioritizing necessary building upgrades. Collaborate with the Board Building Committee to identify and develop funding sources for building maintenance and improvement.

Minimum requirements include:

  • Experience in nonprofit service, fiscal, grant, contract, public relations, human resources management, or community leadership is a must.

  • Five years of increasingly responsible administrative experience.

  • Financial management experience in a nonprofit organization or a public agency.

  • Understanding of and connection to Berkeley and Oakland communities.

  • Experience working with volunteers and Boards of Directors, ability to cultivate board member relationships.

  • Experience working with girls and young women.

  • Experience and the ability to work with gender and racial justice issues, an analytical framework, and intersectional practice.

  • Organizational management with the ability to supervise and develop staff, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Effective organizational and time management skills. Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in fields of business, leadership, education, public administration, human services, or related fields.

  • Demonstrated leadership/track record in fundraising and capacity building.

  • Work experience in education, coaching, or mentorship is desirable.

  • Experience working within the YWCA.

Status: Exempt, Full-time, 12 months per year. Time off as per the Association Personnel Policies.

Compensation and Benefits: The YWCA offers competitive salaries and benefits relative to

organizations of its size.

Starting salary: $140,000

Accountability: Reports to the Board President, who liaisons between the Executive Director and the Board of Directors, serves at the will of the Board of Directors.

Program Manager

Job Description:

The Program Manager will work directly with and report to the Associate  Director and the Executive Director to primarily spearhead the community relationships and manage the curriculum of YWCA Berkeley/Oakland community programs which may include the following: YWCA Well-Being, Girls Group Mentoring, and our Advocacy Initiatives. Furthermore, the Program Manager would host events, as confirmed by the Associate Director, that aim to accessibly provide program resources to community members. Responsibilities may also include assisting with organization wide programming and events. 

Responsibilities:

I. Program Logistics and Implementation

  1. Manages YWCA Berkeley/Oakland programs, which may include the following, but can be subject to change as discussed with the Associate Director:

    1. Well-Being

      • Workshop series and program that provides tools for community members to find a balance among the many stressors and responsibilities in everyday life. This program works with community members and/or NGO/public service staff to prioritize well-being among the financial, mental, emotional, and physical aspects of their life.  

    2. Girls Group Mentoring 

      • A program designed to empower middle school and female identifying students to build strong relationships, learn to advocate for themselves, and develop confidence in their life, decisions, and ambitions. Paired with college aged mentors, GGMP is a space where mentees and mentors learn from each other to make a difference among their communities. 

    3. Advocacy Initiatives

      • Engage and partner with community members to spread awareness on local initiatives impacting women and communities of color. Program Manager and the Associate Director analyze the resource needs of community members to deliver engaging, relevant, and impactful resources.

        1. Examples: The YWCA Berkeley/Oakland is  highly engaged to provide their community with information and accessibility surrounding voter rights, registration, and accessibility.

     2. As a full time staff member, you would be expected to assist and, occasionally lead, organization wide community events

     3. Collaborates with the Executive Director and the Associate Director on methods of program scaling and execution in order to best serve community needs.  

    4. Recruits, trains, and manage volunteers in relevant programming, as necessary

    5. Maintains relationships and communication with community based organizations, student organizations and conference collaborators. 

    6. Develops curriculum and resources that will empower and meet the target needs of the relevant community members of each program

    7. Has weekly check-ins with the Associate Director to provide programming updates and receive feedback.

    8.  Implements and continues to improve upon program and performance feedback as provided by the Associate Director and the Executive Director. 

    9.  Leads program workshops and events representing the YWCA Berkeley/Oakland at our building and off-site in collaboration with other community based organizations. 

II. Administration

  1. Follows YWCA Berkeley/Oakland data collection procedures to maintain program records (contact sheets, status reports, evaluations, program data and statistical reports, etc.)

  2. Leads and develops program related…

    • marketing materials to ensure community engagement and participation in their events and programming

    • community partnerships to ensure program workshops, events, and resources are of relevance and impact to program participants.

III. Other 

  1. Works as a team with other staff, interns, and volunteers.
